Shabbat Shalom
8 Elul 5768
September 5-6, 2008
Shabbat Candle lighting: 7:01 p.m.
Torah Portion: Shoftim
Torah Reading: Deuteronomy 16:18-18:5
Haftarah: Isaiah 51:12-52:12

In the Torah portion Shoftim, Judges, it is not surprising to find the following words, “…you shall not take bribes, for bribes bind the eye of the discerning and upset the plea of the just.” (Deuteronomy 16:19). We have just a few weeks before Rosh Hashanah when we will be judging our own actions. Rabbi Zelig Plishkin (Growth Through Torah, p. 425) reminds us that judging ourselves is even more difficult than judging others even without bribes. He notes that, “We do not want to see any faults in ourselves, and want to think that we are full of virtues. This bias will prevent us from taking an honest look at ourselves and objectively finding our faults and limitations.” That bias serves as a bribe, and turns us from seeing the truth of our life. Imagine, Rabbi Plishkin asks, if instead of reviewing your own life, a complete stranger was looking at you with an objective eye. What would he see? What would he praise? Where would be find fault? During the month of Elul, the Shofar is sounded at the end of the morning service. It is a wakeup call for us to prepare for the coming Holidays. It is a loud reminder for us to consider all our deeds of the past years. Can we spend the next few weeks starting to see our flaws and correcting them and not be bribed by our tendency to think positively of ourselves? I hope we can commit ourselves to that task.

I Gave My Donation to the Synagogue – When Will You?
I want to thank all of you who have generously supported our congregation in the past. I recently received the letter about our Kol Nidre Campaign, and like many of you, I have put it aside. However, I know that donations to our congregation make a difference in the degree that we can continue to create community, to inspire the members of our congregation, to bring healing to the world and to accomplish so many worthy goals. I hope all of you will support our campaign and allow us to flourish. I wrote my check and brought it to the office. I hope you will do so as well.

(Your basic listing will be included regardless).

Women to Women, at Mt. Sinai Hospital, is a group of nine professional, specially trained volunteers who have survived gynecologic cancer and are now working with other gynecologic cancer patients. They provide support for patients, talking about the physical and psychological side effects of the illness as well as treatment options, coping mechanisms and advocacy training. We are supporting this wonderful group of volunteers by collecting toiletries for “comfort bags”. Suggested items for donation include hand creams, lip gloss, pens (generic) ginger tea (the type that comes individually wrapped) ginger lozenges, small memo pads, etc.

Please remember, that the Food Bank of New Jersey is currently running low on donations. Children are home from school and economic conditions are precarious. More and more families rely on food donations. All donations may be dropped off at the Center Office.
