Rabbi Ronald Roth of The Fair Lawn Jewish Center/Congregation B'nai Israel presented a Family Hanukkah Program to the community at the Maurice M. Pine Free Public Library in Fair Lawn. Rabbi Roth read Hanukkah stories to the children and Andrea Pass, Membership Chair of the Fair Lawn Jewish Center, lead the youngsters in singing Hanukkah songs. Social Action Committee - Tents of Hope

When you walk into the lobby in the coming weeks you’ll notice an unusual site-- a tent. The tent is a symbol of our support for the Tents of Hope Campaign to raise awareness about the crisis in Darfur, Sudan. Our tent has been designed and decorated by some 8th grade students who recently graduated from our religious school.

WHAT IS TENTS OF HOPE?
Tents of Hope has been a one year campaign where communities respond to the Genocide in Darfur by creating works of art and focal points for learning about the people of Sudan. Congregations, schools and civic groups in over 195 cities in nine countries are decorating tents with images of hope, love, freedom, humanity and peace to create awareness and raise funds for humanitarian relief. The project will culminate in November with a “Gathering of the Tents” on the National Mall in Washington, DC. The tent is not only a symbol of those who have been displaced from their homes and forced to live in refugee camps, but also a symbol of hope, reminding us that we are one human family.

SOME FACTS:
More than 2 million people have been displaced in Darfur, Sudan.
There are 250,000 Sudanese refugees in camps in Eastern Chad.
Since February 2003, it is estimated that more than 450,000 men, women and children have died as a result of the Genocide.
